Will My Couch Fit Through the Door? How to Measure (Before Delivery Day)

How to tell if a sofa fits through your door: measure the clear opening, the sofa's diagonal depth and hallway turns. Worked example plus tricks that gain…

Every apartment subreddit has the same horror story: the sofa arrives, the delivery crew tries three angles, and it ends up on the curb. The frustrating part is that most of these could have been checked with a tape measure in five minutes.

Short answer: a sofa fits through a door if its smallest dimension (usually height or depth) is at least an inch less than the door's clear width, and its next-smallest dimension fits the door's height. If neither height nor depth fits, measure the sofa's diagonal depth. If that's smaller than the door width, you can tilt it through.

Step 1: Measure the real door opening

Don't measure the door. Measure the clear opening: from the door stop on one side to the face of the open door (or the stop) on the other.

  • Interior doors are usually 28–32 inches wide. Front doors are usually 36.
  • The clear opening is about 1.5–2 inches narrower than that once the door and stops are counted.
  • Taking the door off its hinges wins most of that back. It's two pins and five minutes.

Measure the height too, and check the narrowest spot on the whole route: the building entrance, elevator door, hallway and stairs.

Step 2: Measure the sofa

You need four numbers:

  1. Width (arm to arm)
  2. Depth (front to back)
  3. Height (floor to top of the back)
  4. Diagonal depth — lay a straight edge from the top of the back to the front of the arm. Then measure from the bottom back corner up to that straight edge at a right angle. This is the slimmest profile the sofa has when tilted back.

Retailers list width, depth and height. Diagonal depth is often in the spec sheet or the FAQ. If it isn't, ask. Good furniture companies have it.

Step 3: Compare

The sofa goes through on its narrowest side, so sort your three main numbers smallest to largest:

  • If the smallest is less than the door width minus 1 inch, and the middle one is less than the door height minus 1 inch, it goes straight through.
  • If not, check whether the diagonal depth is less than the door width. If yes, it can be tilted back and walked through.

That's exactly the logic in our Will It Fit calculator. It also checks hallways, corners, ceiling height and stair landings.

Worked example

A sofa that's 84 in wide, 38 in deep and 34 in high. The door is 32 in, with a clear opening of about 30 in, and 80 in tall.

  • Smallest dimension: 34 in. That's more than 29 in (30 minus an inch of wiggle room), so it won't go straight through.
  • Remove the door: the opening goes to about 31.5 in. Still no.
  • Diagonal depth on the spec sheet: 28 in. That's less than 30 in, so it fits, tilted back.

Without that last number, most people would have given up and returned it.

Step 4: Don't forget the turn

Doors aren't usually what stops a sofa. Hallway corners are. A long piece has to pivot, and the longer it is, the wider both hallways need to be. If the sofa is too long to turn flat, movers stand it on end, which only works if the ceiling is higher than the sofa is long.

Stairs with a landing work the same way. The landing's diagonal has to be longer than the sofa.

Tricks that win you inches

  • Take the legs off. Most unscrew and you gain 3–6 inches of height.
  • Remove the door (1.5–2 inches) and the door stops if you need more.
  • Pop off the back cushions and any removable arms. Some sofas have bolt-on arms.
  • Go through a window or balcony door on a ground floor. Pros do this more than you'd think.
  • Buy modular. Sectionals and sofas that ship in pieces solve the problem completely.

Once it's inside

Getting it in is half the battle. Then it has to fit the room. Read is my couch too big for my living room?, or draw your room and sofa to scale in the Furniture Scale Visualizer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my couch will fit through my door?

Measure the door's clear opening and the sofa's height, depth and diagonal depth. If the smallest dimension is narrower than the opening, it fits straight. If not, it can be tilted through when the diagonal depth is narrower than the opening.

What is the standard door width?

Interior doors are usually 28–32 inches and front doors 36 inches, but the clear opening is about 1.5–2 inches less.

What if my couch doesn't fit through the door?

Remove the legs, the door and any removable arms first. If it still won't go, try a window or balcony door, or hire a furniture disassembly service. Many sofas can be taken apart and rebuilt inside.

How much clearance does a sofa need through a door?

Plan on at least an inch on the narrow side. Anything less than 2 inches is tight and needs careful angling.
