"Just got it today and didn't realize how big it would be" is the opening line of a lot of Reddit posts. Usually there's a photo of a deep, comfy sofa that makes the room look like a waiting area, and 100+ comments split between "it's fine" and "return it."
The good news: you don't have to guess. Three measurements tell you if the couch is actually too big or if the room just needs to be rearranged around it.
Short answer: a sofa fits if it's no more than about three-quarters of the wall it sits on, you still have a 30–36 inch walkway past it, and there's 14–18 inches between the sofa and the coffee table. If it passes those, the problem is the layout, not the sofa.
Test 1: Sofa length vs. wall length
Measure the wall the sofa sits against. The sofa should be about 60–75% of that wall. That leaves room for a side table or lamp on at least one end and stops the sofa from looking jammed in.
| Wall length | Ideal sofa length |
|---|---|
| 8 ft (96 in) | 58–72 in |
| 10 ft (120 in) | 72–90 in |
| 12 ft (144 in) | 86–108 in |
| 14 ft (168 in) | 101–126 in |
These are the same numbers our Sofa Size Calculator uses. If your sofa runs wall to wall with no breathing room at either end, it will always look too big, no matter how you style it.
Test 2: The walkway
Walk the path from the door to wherever you go most (the kitchen, the balcony, the hallway). The clear width should be at least 30 inches, ideally 36. If you're turning sideways to get past the arm, the sofa is in the wrong spot or too deep for the room.
Depth matters more than people expect. A 40-inch-deep sofa eats a foot more floor than a 28-inch-deep one, and in a 11-foot room that foot is the whole walkway.
Test 3: Sofa to coffee table
Leave 14–18 inches between the front edge of the seat and the coffee table. Closer and you bang your shins. Further and you can't reach your drink. If you can't get 14 inches without the table hitting the TV stand, the sofa is too deep for the room, or the coffee table is too big. Try a smaller or round one before blaming the sofa.
If it passes but still looks too big
This is the most common outcome, and the Reddit advice is consistent:
- Pull it off the wall. Even 4–6 inches of space behind a sofa makes it look intentional instead of shoved in. It sounds backwards, but it works.
- Get a bigger rug. A tiny rug in front of a big sofa makes the sofa look bigger. The front legs of every seat should sit on the rug. Our rug size calculator gives you the size.
- Lighten everything else. Swap a heavy coffee table for a leggy or glass one, and pick side tables you can see under.
- Go tall elsewhere. Floor-to-ceiling curtains and tall art draw the eye up so the sofa stops being the only big thing in the room.
- Center it on something. Center it on the window, the TV or the rug, not on the wall's leftover space.
If it fails
- Sectional too big? Many sectionals are modular. Removing one seat and shortening one side is a fix that came up repeatedly in r/interiordecorating threads. Keep the long side facing the TV.
- Fails on depth? Return windows are usually short. Measure before the deadline, not after the cushions break in.
- Fails on the wall test but passes the walkway? Move it to a longer wall. People often have it on the wall facing the TV out of habit.
Check before you buy the next one
The easiest fix is not buying a too-big sofa in the first place. The Furniture Scale Visualizer draws the sofa to scale in your room size so you can see the footprint and walkways before delivery day. And check the doorway too: the Will It Fit calculator tells you if it'll make it through the front door and hallway. See will my couch fit through the door?

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my couch is too big?
If the sofa is longer than about three-quarters of its wall, blocks a walkway narrower than 30 inches, or leaves less than 14 inches to the coffee table, it's too big for that spot.
What size couch should I get for a small living room?
For a 10-foot wall, look at sofas around 72–90 inches long and no more than about 36 inches deep. Apartment sofas and loveseats are made for this size.
How do you make a big couch look smaller?
Pull it slightly off the wall, use a rug big enough for its front legs, choose a leggy coffee table, and add tall curtains or art to balance the room.
Should a couch be centered on the wall?
Center it on a focal point instead: the window, TV or rug. A centered sofa with uneven space on each side looks off more often than one aligned to the room's main feature.
