Scroll any real estate portal and the photos that catch your eye are often the twilight ones: a deep blue sky, warm light glowing from every window, the porch lamps on. They look expensive to shoot, and done for real, they are. A photographer has to come back in a narrow window after sunset, often on a separate visit. A virtual twilight gets you a similar image from the daytime photo you already have.
Short answer: a virtual twilight (or day-to-dusk) photo is a daytime exterior converted to look like it was taken just after sunset, with a blue-to-amber sky, lit windows and exterior lights on. Agents use one as the hero or cover image to stand out in search results. You can make one by uploading a daytime exterior to the AI room designer and tapping the Day to dusk photo fix. Label it as enhanced where your MLS requires.
What is a virtual twilight photo?
Real estate photographers call the period just after sunset "blue hour" or "twilight." The sky turns a deep blue, the ambient light drops, and interior lights glow warmly through windows. A twilight shoot captures this, usually in a window of about 15-30 minutes after sunset.
A virtual twilight recreates the look in editing. Traditionally, editors replaced the sky by hand, darkened the scene, painted warm light into each window and added glow to exterior fixtures. Done well, it took a skilled editor a fair amount of time per photo. AI tools now handle the sky, the relighting and the window glow in one pass.
When do agents use day-to-dusk photos?
| Use | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Cover or hero photo | Stands out against rows of daytime thumbnails |
| Luxury and higher-end listings | Matches buyer expectations for polished marketing |
| Homes with great exterior lighting | Shows off landscape lights, pool lights and porch lamps |
| Homes with large windows | Glowing glass reads beautifully at dusk |
| West-facing or view homes | Suggests evening atmosphere on a patio or terrace |
| Social posts and print flyers | Twilight images tend to get noticed in a feed |
Most agents use one twilight image per listing, two at most. The rest of the gallery stays in daylight so buyers can see the property clearly.
Real twilight shoot vs virtual twilight: which is better?
| Real twilight shoot | Virtual twilight (AI) | |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | Narrow window after sunset, weather dependent | Any time, from any daytime photo |
| Visits | Often a second trip | None, uses existing photo |
| Cost | Usually an add-on to the photo package | One credit on DecorCopilot |
| Realism | Real light, real reflections | Very good, check windows and edges |
| Control | Limited by weather and actual lights | Consistent result every time |
| Best for | Flagship listings, architectural homes | Most other listings, fast turnarounds |
A real twilight shoot by a skilled photographer is still the gold standard for high-end homes and architectural photography. For most listings, a virtual twilight gets you a strong hero image without scheduling a second visit.
How do I make a day-to-dusk photo?
- Start with a good daytime exterior. Shoot the front of the house with the sun to the side or behind you, phone level, whole house in frame with some sky. A slightly overcast day is fine because the sky will be replaced anyway.
- Upload it. Go to the AI room designer and upload the photo. Choose the House exterior room type.
- Open the Photo fixes. In the studio results, find Day to dusk alongside Blue sky and Golden hour.
- Tap Day to dusk. The tool turns the sky into a deep blue-to-amber twilight, lights every window with warm interior light, switches on existing exterior and landscape lights, and keeps the house itself identical. One tap, one credit.
- Check and download. Use the before/after slider. Look at the windows, roofline and any trees against the sky.
For the full overview of the feature, see the day-to-dusk page.
What makes a twilight photo look real or fake?
The best twilight images look believable, not neon. Watch for:
- Window glow that's too bright or too orange. Real interior light at dusk is warm but not glowing like a fire. Even glow across all windows looks more natural than a few blazing ones.
- A sky that's too purple or saturated. Natural twilight skies are deep blue fading to soft amber near the horizon.
- Lights where there are no fixtures. Exterior lights should come only from fixtures that actually exist on the house.
- Hard daytime shadows. At dusk, shadows are soft or gone. If the original photo has strong noon shadows, the conversion has more work to do.
Start from a photo with soft, even light for the most convincing result.
Which homes are a poor fit for twilight photos?
- Homes with very few front windows, or windows hidden behind trees
- Condo and apartment buildings where only one unit is for sale (lighting every window implies the whole building)
- Properties where the main selling point is the garden or a daytime view
- Listings with very dark exterior paint, which can disappear at dusk
In those cases, a blue sky or golden hour version is often the better hero image. See AI sky replacement for real estate photos.
Do I need to disclose a virtual twilight on the MLS?
Check your MLS and brokerage rules. Many treat sky and lighting changes as cosmetic, while some require a note like "virtually enhanced" on any digitally altered photo. The NAR Code of Ethics asks agents to present a true picture in advertising, so the house itself, its condition and its surroundings should stay exactly as they are. A day-to-dusk conversion changes time of day, not the property.
Don't add exterior lighting the home doesn't have, and don't use the twilight image to hide something like a neighboring building.
Does a twilight photo help sell a home?
It can make your listing more noticeable in search and on social media, which is the cover photo's job. We won't claim it raises sale prices. Price, condition, location and market decide that. What a twilight cover does reliably is give buyers a reason to click into a listing they might otherwise scroll past.
Tips for Airbnb hosts and property managers
Short-term rental hosts use twilight exteriors as well, especially for cabins, villas and homes with patios or pools. If you do, make sure the exterior lights you show actually exist and work. Guests notice when the arrival looks nothing like the photo. Our Airbnb listing photo checklist covers photo order and honesty.
Try a day-to-dusk conversion
Take your best daytime exterior and run the Day to dusk fix. New accounts get free credits, so you can test it on a real listing first. If you shoot many listings, the real estate page and pricing explain plans for agents.
