Repainting a house exterior is a big, visible commitment. It's expensive, it takes days, your neighbors see it every morning, and it's hard to picture from a 2-inch paint chip. Paint brands sell sample pots, and you can brush a few patches beside the front door, but those patches never show you the whole house with new trim, a different door and a cleaner front yard. A photo of your home run through an AI exterior design tool does.

Short answer: take a straight-on daytime photo of the front of your house, upload it to the AI room designer with the House exterior room type, and try a few styles and color schemes. Use the Curb appeal photo fix for a quick tidy-up preview. Narrow it to two schemes, then paint large test patches on the sunny and shaded sides before buying gallons.

What can AI exterior design show me?

Change How well a photo preview works Notes
Body, trim and door paint colors Very well The most common use
Front door color and style Very well Small change, big effect
Shutters, house numbers, light fixtures Well Good for small upgrades
Siding material (wood, board and batten, stucco look) Well A direction, not a spec
Roof color Moderately Hard to judge texture
Porch or portico additions Moderately Needs a contractor or architect to check
Landscaping and front yard Well See our landscape design guide
Structural changes, additions Concept only Not a construction drawing

The tool keeps your house's shape, windows and roofline, so you're seeing your actual home with new finishes rather than a different house.

How do I take a good photo of my house for an exterior preview?

  • Stand across the street or at the end of the driveway so the whole front is in frame with some sky.
  • Hold the phone level at chest height. Tilting up makes the house lean backwards.
  • Shoot on a bright overcast day or with the sun to the side. Strong backlight puts the facade in shadow.
  • Move cars, bins and hoses if you can. (The Curb appeal fix can also remove them in the preview.)
  • Use the 1x lens. Wide-angle mode bends the corners of the house.
  • Take a second shot at an angle that shows a side wall, since colors look different in shade.

How do I preview new exterior colors with AI?

  1. Upload the photo to the AI room designer and choose House exterior.
  2. Pick a style, such as Farmhouse, Coastal, Mediterranean, Traditional or Modern, and add a note with the colors you're considering: "warm white body, black window trim, natural wood front door."
  3. Generate a few versions. Keep the intensity moderate if you want the same architecture with new colors.
  4. Use Magic Edit to change one element at a time. Brush over the front door and choose Restyle to try "deep green front door with brass hardware," or brush the shutters and remove them.
  5. Tap the Curb appeal photo fix for a cleaned-up version: same colors refreshed, trimmed shrubs, fresh mulch, a tidy driveway and potted plants at the entry.

Each generation or fix costs one credit, and new accounts start with free credits.

Which exterior color rules actually hold up?

A few rules show up in almost every exterior color guide:

Rule What it means
Three colors One body color, one trim color, one accent (usually the front door)
Respect fixed materials Roof, brick, stone and pavers don't change, so the paint must work with their undertones
Go a shade lighter or darker than you think Colors look lighter and brighter outdoors in full sun
Contrast for definition Trim lighter or darker than the body shows the architecture
Match the style Historic homes suit period palettes; modern homes take bolder contrast
Check the neighbors and HOA Many HOAs require approval or have approved palettes

The roof is the most commonly missed one. A warm brown roof under a cool blue-gray body can look slightly off, and it's the paint that's easier to change.

  • Warm white body, black windows and trim, wood door
  • Greige or mushroom body with white trim
  • Deep green or dark gray-green body with cream trim
  • Navy body with white trim and a bright front door
  • Soft black or charcoal body with natural wood accents
  • Limewash or soft whites on brick
  • Earthy clay, sand and terracotta tones in warm, dry climates

Stark bright white and the cool grays that were common a few years ago have cooled off, though they still sell.

How much does it cost to paint a house exterior?

Costs depend heavily on house size, number of stories, siding type, prep work and region. Our house painting cost calculator gives an estimate for your house. Prep (scraping, repairs, caulking, priming) often makes up a large part of the cost and is the main reason quotes differ.

Smaller curb appeal upgrades cost far less:

Upgrade Rough DIY cost range Impact
Paint the front door Under $100 High
New house numbers and mailbox $50-200 Medium
New exterior light fixtures $100-400 Medium-high
Fresh mulch and edging $100-300 High
Planters at the entry $100-250 Medium
Power wash siding and paths Tool rental or a few hundred for a pro High

Should I update my exterior before selling?

Sometimes. Fresh paint, a clean entry and a tidy yard are among the more common pre-listing projects because the front of the house is the listing's cover photo and the first thing buyers see in person. But not every project returns what it costs. Our pre-listing renovation calculator and should you renovate before selling help you decide what's worth doing. We won't promise any project raises your sale price.

If you're an agent or seller and only need the photos to look their best, the Curb appeal, Blue sky, Green lawn and Day to dusk photo fixes work on listing photos without changing the property itself. Disclose edits according to your MLS rules. See AI sky replacement for real estate photos for more on that.

What should I check before committing to a color?

  1. Paint large samples. At least 2 x 2 feet on the sunny side and the shady side. Look at them morning, noon and evening.
  2. Look from the street. Colors read differently at 50 feet than at 2 feet.
  3. Check the roof and brick. Hold samples right next to them.
  4. Check HOA and historic district rules. Some require approval before you paint.
  5. Ask your painter about prep. Peeling paint, rot or failing caulk needs fixing first.
  6. Think about heat. Very dark colors absorb more heat. Some vinyl siding manufacturers restrict dark colors for this reason, so check before painting vinyl.

Can AI design a whole new facade?

It can show a concept: board and batten instead of lap siding, a new porch roof, stone on the lower wall. These are useful for talking to an architect or contractor about direction and budget. They aren't construction drawings, and anything that changes the structure, roofline or footprint needs proper plans and permits.

Try it on your own house

Snap a photo of your house from the sidewalk, upload it, and try three schemes: a safe one, a bold one and one in between. It's the cheapest round of exterior design you'll do. Free credits on signup cover the first few. For the yard itself, read AI landscape design from a photo.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see what my house would look like in a different color?

Yes. Upload a photo of your house to an AI exterior design tool and try different body, trim and door colors on the real facade.

How many colors should a house exterior have?

Usually three: a body color, a trim color and an accent color for the front door or shutters.

How do I choose an exterior paint color that goes with my roof?

Match undertones. Warm brown or tan roofs suit warm body colors; gray or black roofs suit cooler or neutral colors. Hold samples next to the roof before deciding.

Is AI exterior design accurate?

It's a reliable preview of colors and finishes on your actual house. Colors outdoors shift with light, so always confirm with large painted samples.

Can AI remove cars and bins from a house photo?

Yes. The Curb appeal fix tidies the scene, and Magic Edit lets you brush over a specific object and erase it.
