This is one of the most common posts on r/FengShui and r/DesignMyRoom: a floor plan, a red arrow from the door to the foot of the bed, and a title like "can't find a way to not directly face the door."
Short answer: facing the door is fine. Being in line with it is the problem. Feng shui wants you to see the door from bed, but not have your feet pointing straight out of it. If you can't rotate or slide the bed, a solid footboard or bench, a rug, and keeping the door closed at night soften it a lot.
Facing the door vs. in line with the door
People mix these up constantly, and it leads to bad layouts.
- Command position (good): from your pillow you can see the door, but the bed is diagonal from it, not straight in front of it.
- Coffin position (avoid): your feet point straight out the doorway, so you would walk out the door if you stood up off the end of the bed. The name comes from the old custom of carrying the dead out feet first.
- Door behind you (avoid): you can't see who comes in. This is often worse for sleep than the coffin position, because it feels unsafe.
In our Feng Shui Bed Placement Calculator, seeing the door is worth 20 points and not having your feet to the door is worth 15. So "I can see the door but my feet point at it" still scores about 85 out of 100. That is a good room with one thing to soften, not a crisis.
First, check whether you really can't move it
The top answer on a lot of these threads is simply "turn the bed." Before you buy a single cure, try these:
- Rotate 90° so the headboard sits on the side wall. You'll see the door from the side instead of the foot.
- Slide it off the door line. Even 12–18 inches sideways means your feet no longer point straight out the doorway.
- Swap with the desk or dresser. Reddit commenters often spot that the dresser has the best wall.
Sketching it takes five minutes. Or enter your door and window position in the Feng Shui Room Layout Generator and it draws the command position for you.
Fixes when the bed truly has to stay
Put something solid at the foot of the bed
This is the fix almost everyone recommends. A footboard, a storage bench, a chest or even a low bookshelf breaks the straight line between your feet and the door. It also gives you somewhere to put a throw blanket, which is the practical win.
Ground the path with a rug
A rug at the foot of the bed slows the "rush" from the door, both symbolically and in how the room feels as you walk in. Pick one big enough to sit partly under the bed. A small runner floating in the gap looks like an afterthought.
Keep the door closed at night
Simple, free, and it handles most of the light and noise from the hallway, which is what wakes people up.
Add a plant or screen in the line
A tall plant near the foot of the bed is a popular choice (snake plants come up a lot because they're hard to kill). In a bigger room, a folding screen or curtain partway along the path does the same job.
Mind what is on the other side
If the door opens straight onto a bathroom or a staircase, the effect feels stronger. Keep that bathroom door closed too.
What not to do
- Don't fix the door line by putting the headboard under a window if that also blocks your view of the door. You'll go from one weak spot to two. See bed under a window: is it really bad feng shui?
- Don't put a mirror facing the bed to "see the door." A mirror that shows the door is a traditional fix, but one that reflects you in bed is considered disruptive. Put it on a side wall so it shows the door without facing the bed.
- Don't panic. A lot of people in these threads say they slept in this position for years and felt fine. If you do too, the fixes are optional.
See it before you move anything
If you're torn between two layouts, upload a photo of the room to the AI feng shui redesign. It keeps your real walls, door and windows and shows the bed in the command position with the furniture rearranged around it.

Frequently asked questions
Is it bad if my bed faces the door?
Facing the door is fine, and seeing it from bed is actually what feng shui recommends. The position to avoid is having your feet point straight out the doorway.
What is the coffin position in feng shui?
It's when the bed sits in line with the door so your feet point straight out of it. The name comes from the tradition of carrying the dead out feet first.
How do you fix a bed that faces the door?
Slide or rotate the bed off the door line if you can. If not, add a solid footboard or bench, a rug at the foot of the bed, and keep the door closed at night.
Is it worse to have your back to the door?
Most feng shui schools say yes. Not being able to see who enters is considered worse than the coffin position, because it keeps you on alert while you sleep.
